I’m sure you know that all of our usual WaldenTRI coaching & training activities have been suspended for the time being. However, as the lockdown continues I think it’s increasingly important for us to stay in touch with each other and to share our motivations and our training activities. Encouraging each other to stay fit & healthy is surely beneficial not just physically but mentally too.
So I’ve put together a range of training activities that I encourage everyone in the club to try out. It doesn’t matter what level of fitness or performance you have – the important thing is simply taking part if you can.
Run 5k (or more) anywhere you like whenever you like and upload to Strava.
Check where you are on the 5k challenge's leaderboard
(My Clubs >> WaldenTRI :: MeridianTC :: Interclub challenge)
You can make as many attempts as you want and your fastest effort will be shown on the leaderboard.
The scoring system will ensure that every runner counts so do get stuck in - and maybe start planning a downhill 5k route with a tailwind...?
Zwift indoor turbo training
We have several virtual club rides during the week, held at a range of different speeds to suit all levels of fitness. We use a voice chat service too so that club members can talk to each other during the rides. It works very well.
Check “Events” at the club’s Facebook group to see which rides take place when. To take part you need to follow the ride leader on Zwift in order to be sent an invitation which you can then accept.
Several members also take part in Zwift races: usually the British Cycling road race on Tuesday evenings and the British Cycling 10 mile time trial on Thursday evenings. You simply choose which performance category you’d like to compete in.
Strava segment challenges
We may not be able to physically meet each other but we can still ride & run individually. Our Strava club is an ideal way to provide informal, friendly competition with clubmates.
Have a crack at the nominated segments on your own at any time, and every Sunday night we check the club leaderboards for those segments and publish them at the club’s Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/WaldenTRI
The current “guest” segment is “Thaxted to Debden”: www.strava.com/segments/815972. It has proven very popular so we’ll keep it in the competition for at least another week.
Attempt them as many times as you want, and upload your performances to Strava.
How fast are your transitions? Club members have been setting up their kit in back gardens and posting their videos to our Facebook group. Check out the demo video and simple rules here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/WaldenTRI/permalink/2671761259613753/
There’s no need for fitness: just an aptitude for getting changed in a hurry! I’ve set the same challenge for WaldenJNR too.
The club’s own Technical Official Elaine Bramley has been ensuring everyone complies with the rules and I've been awarding marks for style. :) I salute everyone who has taken part so far - very impressive, and very entertaining!
Coached live video turbo training sessions
Not everyone has the necessary technology & equipment to take part in Zwift rides. However, if you have a simple mechanical turbo trainer you can take part in the club’s coached group live video sessions. These are a lot of fun as you can see your fellow clubmates working alongside you and chat with them too.
Check the club’s Facebook group for session timings (such as Friday evenings), grab your towel, fire up Zoom, and off we go.
