Coaching and training news - update from Head Coach Mark Fraser
I’m sure we all feel that triathlon is pretty trivial while so many people around the world are dealing with such a serious health emergency. Of course, all of our usual club coaching & training activities have been suspended for the time being.
However, I do think it’s important for us to stay in touch with each other and to share our motivations and our training activities. We can encourage each other to stay as fit & healthy as possible in these extraordinary circumstances.
Then, when normal life eventually resumes, we’ll be in a position as a club and as individual triathletes to pick up our training & racing once again.
So I’ve put together a range of training activities that I encourage everyone in the club to try out. It doesn’t matter what level of fitness or performance you have – the important thing is simply taking part if you can. They include:-
Strava segment challenges (both for running & cycling)
Zwift indoor turbo training group rides (offering a wide range of different speed choices)
Zwift races (these too offer a full variety of categories)
Group live video turbo training sessions (watch clubmates working alongside you)
A transition challenge (no need for any fitness: just skills in doing things in a hurry!)
You’ll receive a separate coaching & training mailshot from me with full details of these activities. However, we use the club’s closed Facebook group to promote and discuss them, so do drop in at facebook.com/groups/WaldenTRI regularly. This is where I’d love to see what you and your families are doing to stay fit and healthy.
That’s all for now. Stay safe everybody, and drop me a line at email@example.com any time.

Cambridge Half Marathon - Sun 7th March
Several club members competed in the Cambridge Half Marathon a few weeks ago, with some fantastic results. Gerry Frewin finished in a time of 1:19:03 (and a great PB for him!), Chris Outtersides in 1:28:33, Jeremy Lovell in 1:28:39, Peter Macdonald in 1:54:12 and Eddie Bowers in 2:01:14. Well done to all!
WaldenTRI at the European Duathlon Championships - Punta Umbria, 7th-8th March
by Lem Lawrence
4 members of WaldenTRI qualified to represent Team GB, and took part in the European Duathlon Championships, over the weekend of 7th -8th March, in Punta Umbria. The event encompassed the best Duathletes across Europe from Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Netherlands & Finland.
The Sprint Distance event took place on Saturday, which involved a 5K run, 20K cycle (Draft Legal), then another 2.5K run through the busy, well supported streets of the Spanish Coastal town.
The course and weather were incredible – hardly any wind, and beautiful sunshine. The roads were mostly pancake flat with a distinct lack of potholes and puddles, which we had all become used to training in! Josh Vail was first off, competing in the 16-19 category, and brings back a Bronze medal, having completed the course in an amazing time of only 4 seconds over the hour mark! Next off was Lem Lawrence, in the 45-49 category. Lem completed the course in a PB time of 1hr 5mins 47secs. Steve Bunce was next, in the 60-64 age group, and Steve came in at 1hr 12mins 45secs. Claire Hall was defending her European Title in the female 45-49 category, and won gold again, by over 2 minutes from her nearest competitor, in a time of 1hr 6mins 57secs. The racing particularly on the bike was extremely exciting, consisting of some pretty large packs and tight drafting.
Topping off an amazing weekend for Claire, she competed for the first time, the following day in the Standard Distance (10K run, 36.8K cycle, 5K run), again winning Gold in her category, in a time of 2hours, 5mins, 52secs.
Double Olympic Triathlon Champion, Alistair Brownlee competed in the Elite European Championships over the weekend and was watched by the WaldenTRI crew, winning bronze.
The crowds and camaraderie of all the athletes was an incredible experience. Team GBR definitely won gold in the supporter stakes. I was thinking this would be my one and only attempt at representing GB, but I have to admit that it was pretty addictive – I have already signed up to the qualifier for next year's Standard Distance in October, and I'll be out training hard over the TRI season to aim for that. Claire and Josh have already qualified after their results from the weekend!!
Bedford Duathlon - Sun 15th March
9 members of WaldenTRI and WaldenJNR took part in Bedford Duathlon, a rare draft legal race, qualifying for 2021 ITU Townsville Sprint Distance Duathlon World Championships.
The weather conditions were epic, with a 25mph wind and nothing to hide. Always expected to be difficult conditions at Bedford.
After the mass start in the first 5km run, the pack quickly spread, Luhan, Josh and Michael in front completed the leg in 17:48, 18:00 and 18:14 respectively. Ben and Innes ran together pushing each other, they entered T1 together, with a fantastic transition Innes was already on her bike while Ben was playing kite with his bike.
The 20km bike was carnage. The wind was breaking all groups, it was too easy to stay in the wheels but too hard to be at the front. The wind catching the deep section wheels was making every tight bend very challenging.
Finally, come the 2.5km, fighting wind to run when legs are heavy is Michael seems to be good at, 10:06 for the second run. Maybe it is the hanger of running after his shoes in transition, they have been blown away :)
Welldone to Josh, Michael, Innes and Georgina for securing their spot for Townsville.
Congratulations to new parents Phil Mckechnie and Zoe Noakes!
Tomos Mckechnie Noakes was born on Wednesday 18th March at 10.16. Weighing 7lb 5 (3.33kg, which is lucky in some countries apparently!). Zoe and Tomos are doing very well!
Unfortunately all Eastern Region League races are cancelled until June 30th, including WaldenTRI.
Also a BIG THANKS to all volunteers who stepped up to marshall at the cancelled Duathlon. Don’t worry you will have more opportunities to help in the very near future.
Membership pricing update
In light of the current situation the committee has decided to defer the price increase for membership until Jan 2021.
The club has now moved to taking membership fees and session costs (when they resume) via direct debit. Senior membership fees are now £15 every 6 months (increasing to £20 every 6 months from January 2021).
You should all have received an email with details and a direct debit mandate to be completed. If you plan on attending sessions we would urge you to complete the mandate asap to ensure that when sessions resume, you are able to attend and pay for sessions under the new system.
For any session cards remaining, coaches will continue to accept these for the duration of 2020 (we will of course not charge you by direct debit for those sessions). Session cards have now been removed from sale.
Womens’ indoor soft ball cricket
On Sunday 15th March, 5 of WaldenTRI ladies took part in ‘Battle of the Sports’ at the High School. Claire Hall, Cheryl Keen, Leanne Kermack, Emma Williams, and Sam Hughes battled it out with other Saffron Walden sports teams (hockey and cricket clubs) at indoor soft ball cricket. We all really enjoyed our first experience of this sport and had great fun. We definitely improved as we played more games and our strength was running between wickets rather than hitting the ball or catching! But I think we did surprisingly well considering we were all complete beginners.
